The Jeep Compass Takes on the Ford Escape: Which is Right for You?

The compact crossover is currently the most popular vehicle segment in the country right now, and its popularity is not misplaced. This can be attributed to the car's versatility, affordability, and off-road capability.

The Jeep Compass is a thoroughly modern compact crossover. It is sleek, spacious, and elegant. It is loaded with a traction management system, which helps the vehicle adjust to just about any terrain. The new Compass also boasts a powerful 2.4-liter engine that has an excellent fuel economy rating.

The Ford Escape is also an impressive compact crossover. It feels less spacious than its competitors, but it is a capable crossover and a worthy competitor for the Compass.

Features

The Jeep Compass is decked out with a myriad of features that ensure a comfortable and enjoyable drive. These include seven standard airbags, three transmission choices, and standard air conditioning with dual-zone climate control. The Compass comes standard with a 2.4-liter engine that generates up to 180 horsepower. This engine is capable of towing up to 2,000 pounds.

The list of available features is long and just as impressive. These include the fully disconnecting rear axle and power transfer unit, the Selec-Terrain Traction management system, an eight-way power-adjustable driver's seat with memory settings, a premium-wrapped heated steering wheel, and so much more.

The Ford Escape features fewer features by comparison. However, at higher trim levels, more features are available. As standard, the Ford Escape comes with a 1.5-liter engine and an eight-speed automatic transmission. It also features electric power-assisted steering, traction control, post-collision braking, and six-way manually-adjustable driver's seat.

Size

The Jeep Compass is a sizable compact crossover SUV. It weighs 3,327 pounds (Base Curb Weight). It measures 64.8-inches high and 173 inches long. The Compass comfortably seats five passengers, offering headroom of 39.2 inches in the front and 38.5 inches in the rear. It also features legroom measuring 41.8 inches in the front and 38.3 inches in the back. It has a cargo volume of 27.2 cubic feet with the rear seats up and 59.8 cubic feet with the rear seats folded.

The Ford Escape is slightly larger than the Compass, weighing in at 3,464 pounds. This has a negative impact on power and fuel economy. It is 66.1 inches high and 180.5 inches long. It offers headroom of 40 inches in the front and 39.3 inches in the rear. It also features legroom measuring 42.4 inches in the front and 38.9 inches in the back. It has a cargo volume of 37.5 cubic feet. with the rear seats up and 65.4 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. Though the Ford Escape may be larger, it simply doesn't have enough power to operate efficiently at maximum load capacity.

Technology

The Jeep Compass comes standard with a breadth of tech features such as a rear-view auto-dimming mirror, a seven-inch infotainment system, Apple CarPlay®, and Android Auto™ integration, keyless ignition, Bluetooth® audio streaming, hands-free communication, and Electronic stability control. Available features include adaptive cruise control, rear parking assist, blind-spot monitoring, and lane-keeping assist.

The Ford Escape features an electric power-assisted steering system, a post-collision braking system, Sirius XM satellite radio, an AM/FM stereo with six speakers, selectable drive mode, and power windows. It also features blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning, automated emergency braking, and rear cross-traffic alert.

However, the Jeep Compass offers more value for money at the lowest trim levels. It also provides more optional features making the driving experience more enjoyable.

Off-Road Capability

Both the Jeep Compass and Ford Escape are available in front- and all-wheel-drive configuration. However, the Jeep Compass is much more capable off-road thanks to the more powerful engine, an advanced terrain management system, and available hill-descent control system, and an available active drive-low system.
