Here's why the Dodge Charger is a better choice than the Ford Taurus

People often want a vehicle that can pull double or triple duty. They want something that looks good, can fit the whole family, and even has some capabilities like towing, performance, or nifty seating configurations. One such model is the Dodge Charger, and when it's not spending the weekends lighting up the pavement with its muscle car charm, it's busy being a sedan that's roomy enough for the family.

Another model that is in the same segment is the Ford Taurus. Today we'll compare the two and show you why you'd rather drive way in a Charger!

In recent years the Charger has shown that it has a family-friendly side, but it certainly hasn't gotten soft. It has an amazing four-engine lineup with horsepower and torque specs ranging from exhilarating to mindboggling.

  • 3.6L V6: 300 horsepower and 264 lb-ft torque
  • 5.7L HEMI® V8: 370 horsepower and 395 lb-ft torque
  • 392 HEMI® V8: 485 horsepower and 475 lb-ft torque
  • Supercharged 6.7L HEMI® SRT Hellcat V8: 707 horsepower and 650 lb-ft torque
  • The Taurus, on the other hand, isn't nearly as exciting. The base engine is a 3.5L with only 288 horsepower. If you want a little more you can get a 3.5L EcoBoost version, but it still tops out at 365 horsepower and 350 lb-ft torque.  Even if you go with the the Charger's base V6 model, you'll still get a stronger engine.

Both models have a backup camera and Bluetooth for hands-free calls, though the Charger also has standard rear parking sensors to further protect your back bumpers. Both models also have advanced safety technologies to help with crash avoidance.

The Charger can get the following:

  • Full-speed forward collision warning with active braking
  • LaneSense lane departure warning and lane keep assist
  • Blind spot monitoring with rear cross path detection
  • Automatic high beams
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • If you're someone who wants added peace of mind, especially if you have precious cargo on board, then you'll love the options available on the Charger.

The Taurus also has some advanced safety technologies. Theirs includes adaptive cruise control, a lane-keeping system, blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and the MyKey for teen drivers. It is a shame that there aren't automatic high beams or the collision warning with brake assist.

Style is subjective, but there's always strong statements you can make. For us, there's no denying that the Charger is a car with a lot more edge. You're going to stand out if you plan on revving your engine at the red light or if you're picking up your kids from school. Designers did a great job blending modern vehicle curves with the old-school muscle look, and the final product is an aggressively-attractive performance sedan.

The Taurus is demure. There is some nice sculpting across the hood, but nothing about the exterior really stands out or is going to encourage a double take. The same can be said for the inside. The Taurus's interior looks modern in some places, but the touchscreen placement and graphics look dated. Material quality also leaves a lot to be desired.

The Charger's interior matches the exterior and looks like it's built for performance. We especially like the available sport pedals and performance shifter. There are also different levels of leather, two-tone upholstery options, and you can choose between regular seats or sports seats.

    And the winner is....

Our Charger! The two might be a similar size, but the Taurus cannot touch the Charger's performance specs and it has better interior quality and exterior looks. The ability to also get emergency braking with the Charger is another standout, especially with family coming along for the ride.
